Introduction

The study programme

Globally, the demand for dairy and animal protein is on the increase. At the same time, livestock farming has seen an increase in farm size in the past few decades. This is due to a shift in focus to technological development and to the entrepreneurial side of farming where cost-effectiveness and profitability determine decision-making. Besides this, farmers have to take into account animal welfare, sustainability, the environment, healthcare and legislation. In the Livestock Production programme, you will be prepared for your part in creating a sustainable and profitable livestock production sector by means of technological innovation and the application of entrepreneurial skills. This 1.5-year programme was specially developed for students from our partner university in Angers, France.

Programme content

This is what you will learn

In the first semester in Dronten, you will choose the field of study that you wish to specialize in: Dairy Farming, Pig Farming or Poultry Farming. Your choice will determine which two modules you will be taking this semester. Each module centres around a practical case that involves communicating professionally with a farmer, gathering and analysing farm data and formulating advice that is consistent with this farmer’s objectives. One module is more technical advisory oriented. It concludes with an advisory meeting with the farmer, in which you will present your advice in the form of an advisory report. The other module is more strategic and economical orientated. The second semester takes you to our partner university in Angers, France, where you will take several courses and do an internship at an agricultural company. The third semester consists of an internship at an international orientated company, a graduation thesis and the module Personal Development.
