The study programme

Managing a dairy farm can be very challenging. Farm owners and managers have to deal with changing circumstances due to climate change and public demand, as well as also milk price fluctuations, production costs, and environmental issues. Besides this, the focus is not only on dairy farming in general but also on the business side of farming with decision-making based on cost-effectiveness and profitability. The International Dairy Management programme prepares you for the job of managing and developing dairy farms, either as an advisor, a farm manager, or as a farm owner.

    You know this programme is the one for you if dairy farming puts a smile on your face. Because, although this programme is business-oriented, the programme also includes practical experiences. The sector that it prepares you for is very specific and most of your fellow students either come from (dairy) farming families or are into livestock farming in general.

Programme content

This is what you will learn

This 1-year programme is made up of three modules and concludes with an internship and a thesis. These are the modules:

Modules

  • Dairy Specialist and Advisor

    In this module, you will learn how to act as a consultant or an advisor in the dairy farming sector. This involves communicating with farmers, gathering farm data, analysing this data and formulating advice, while bearing the farmers’ objectives in mind. You will write an advisory report and present this in an advisory meeting to an actual farmer. For a solid background in giving advice, you will gain knowledge on dairy nutrition, dairy genetics, dairy health and roughage production.

  • International Entrepreneur

    The decisions that farmers have to make are becoming more and more complex. That is why, in this module, you will learn the right competences to develop ideas and calculate the economic effects of operational, tactical and strategic options that you have in mind for your farm or the farms belonging to your clients. In this module, you will learn to develop new ideas, explore the possibilities for the improvement of farm management and for farm development. There are classes in: farm economics, strategic management, marketing and sales, world agricultural policy, HRM and international dairy production. And you will write a strategic advisory report and present this in an advisory meeting to the farmer.

    At Aeres, we also focus on personal growth, This is why in this module, we will reflect on your development and prepare you for your professional career.

  • Applied Livestock Research

    In this module, you will learn how to:

    • Prepare a research proposal
    • Analyse data from dairy research
    • Translate research findings into practical recommendations

  • Internship and thesis

    After the third module, you will do an internship in the Netherlands at, for example, a feed company, research institute, dairy equipment company, or a specific international advisory organisation. You will work on a subject that you either choose yourself or together with the organisation of your internship. In your graduation thesis, you demonstrate your ability to conduct applied research on this subject, using the knowledge and skills gained during the programme.
