Introduction

The study programme

Today’s poultry sector is known for the fact that it is very well organised and that the demand for poultry is growing globally. Also, as is the case with all businesses in the agricultural sector, poultry farms have seen a considerable increase in size in the past few decades. This increase is due to a shift in focus to the business side of farming with decision-making based on cost-effectiveness and profitability. Besides this, poultry farming businesses have to contend with outbreaks of disease, environmental change, political measures and the public debate on animal welfare. If you see this as a challenge, it means you are up to the job of managing and developing poultry farms as an advisor, a farm manager or an entrepreneur. The International Poultry Management programme will prepare you for this.

Programme content

This is what you will learn

Year 1

The focus of this programme is on optimisation. You will learn about the differences in international poultry farming and learn all there is to know about farm management. The programme is made up of three modules, followed by an internship and the writing of a thesis. It is practice-oriented, meaning you will apply what you learn in assignments on farms and practical training at Aeres Farms, our very own training and learning environment. There are also courses on applied business economics, marketing and strategy (entrepreneurship), which cover subjects such as poultry nutrition, breeding, genetics, poultry health and welfare, feed production, climate, and economics. The Agribusiness programme spans three semesters (1.5 years), of which one is spent studying at our partner university, Groupe ESA in Angers, France. The programme kicks off in Dronten with two modules on Export Management and Supply Chain Analysis, brings you to France for a module on Viticulture in Angers and ends with an internship and thesis project.
