Greetje Schouten focuses on transitions towards future-proof food systems, with particular attention to the connections between agriculture, markets, policy and societal impact. Central to her work is the question of how food systems and value chains can become more inclusive, sustainable, healthy and economically viable, both in the Netherlands and internationally. In doing so, she works explicitly at the intersection of research, practice and education.

Greetje has a background as a researcher in the international agri-food sector. Before joining Aeres, Greetje was team leader Food & Agribusiness at KIT Institute in Amsterdam. There, together with her team, she worked on developing knowledge to strengthen sustainable and inclusive value chains and food systems in, among others, Africa and Asia. In that role, she worked closely with companies, governments and civil society organisations.

Previously, she was affiliated with Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam and Wageningen University & Research, where she also conducted research on global value chains and local food systems. This research focused, among other things, on sustainability standards, multi-stakeholder governance, public-private partnerships, landscape approaches, monitoring and evaluation, and inclusive business models. She uses a range of qualitative research methodologies, including comparative configurational methods (such as QCA), systematic literature reviews, process tracing and contribution analysis.

Greetje is committed to strengthening the connection between practice and applied research, and to educating students who can contribute to the food transitions of the future.
