In the International Year of Soils, 2018, Gera van Os was appointed professor of Sustainable Soil Management. Her personal ambition is to provide students with sufficient background knowledge, in order to adopt a researching and critical mind regarding the information and challenges that they face in the field. Besides her substantive expertise, she has extensive experience in passing on information from research to education. She is a skilled adviser on innovation issues and collaboration forms between research, education and entrepreneurs.

Gera completed two study programmes: Biology at Amsterdam University and Plant Pathology at Wageningen UR. She did her doctoral research at Leiden University at the department of Microbial Ecology. Her subject was soil resistance to Pythium root rot in flower bulb breeding. She has been a scientific researcher at Wageningen Plant Research for more than 25 years.in the field of plant and soil health.
